Compare the scope before the concrete price
Make two proposals comparable: preparation, installation, finish, access and responsibility.

- 01Same dimensions
- 02Same preparation
- 03Same finish
Compare matching scopes
| Scope item | Proposal A | Proposal B |
|---|---|---|
| Existing paving | Removal included | Not stated → ask |
| Base preparation | Written detail | Allowance → clarify |
| Finish | Broom finish | Decorative finish → different scope |
| Cleanup | Hauling included | Owner handles → extra task |
A lower total can cover less work. Resolve each difference before comparing the final prices; these examples are not actual offers.
Start with one project description
Give each contractor the same intended use, dimensions, site access notes and finish preference. Ask them to verify the measurements. A price for a new surface over an unspecified base is not directly comparable with a price that includes removal and full preparation.
Separate what is included
Request written descriptions of demolition, disposal, grading, base preparation, concrete placement, jointing, finish, cleanup and restoration. Ask who handles permits and inspections. Mark excluded work so that another trade or a later phase does not become an unexpected assumption.
Understand changes and payment
Ask how unforeseen conditions are documented and how any price change is approved before work proceeds. Request payment milestones, cancellation terms and warranty information in writing. Do not treat a photograph, a low price or a confident promise as proof of licensing or insurance.
